Riverside Drive

29 November 2019 – 25 January 2020

About

We are pleased to present the second solo exhibition by Joe Andoe at the gallery.
This new series of paintings addresses recurring themes that the artist holds dear: landscapes, totem animals (wolves, horses, buffalos), but also American cars driving through the night.
As symbols of a powerful, idealized and obsolete America, these subjects are instilled in Andoe’s work with a certain tenderness – in the animals’ gaze as well as in how colors and textures are treated. As recollections and visions of the past.

Joe Andoe, Red Wolf, 2019

Like ghosts - a bit ironic but in particular relieved of any conquering desire - they float lightly in the light and stand out from the almost always dark or monochrome backgrounds.
A new series of landscapes titled Riverside Drive, – which lends its title to the exhibition – reverses the relationship to light by using multicolored backgrounds. This series is part of the artist’s continuing theme of “roadsides”, highly cinematic visions that also symbolize a certain view of America.

Riverside drive is a poem or an essence; not the thing but the feeling I get from it.
